Six degrees of gardening

I love nonsensical challenges. Challenges that are almost always self imposed and completely valueless.

Before I dive in, this is where I give you the chance to run and read another blog that at least provides some semblance of value.

You stayed, huh? Lucky you.

So here is today's challenge - connect two of my favorite "passions", gardening and the New York Mets, through "six degrees of separation". This is similar to the "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon" game (click here for the details) that was all the rage years back (quick note - when you added your beverage of choice it was actually entertaining - which says a lot about what it takes to entertain me). We move on.

All fun facts have been pulled from Wikipedia and I've included the actual link for each under the "Fun Fact" for each item.

Here goes:

New York Mets
1 - The team was brought into existence in 1962.

Fun fact - The primary Mets logo, designed by sports cartoonist Ray Gatto, each part of the skyline has special meaning—at the left is a church spire, symbolic of Brooklyn, the borough of churches; the second building from the left is the Williamsburg Savings Bank, the tallest building in Brooklyn; next is the Woolworth Building; after a general skyline view of midtown comes the Empire State Building; at the far right is the United Nations Building. The bridge in the center symbolizes that the Mets, by bringing National League baseball back to New York, represent all five boroughs.

2 - 1962 was the year Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points in an NBA game, a feat that has never been matched.

Fun fact - Chamberlain played a villainous warrior and counterpart of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film Conan the Destroyer (1984), where his most remarkable spoken phrase is "thieves should be hanged":

3 - Wilt Chamberlain claims to have "courted" 20,000 women in his lifetime.

Not much more to say here, he made the claim in his 1991 biography, A View From Above.

4 - 20,000 immediately brings to mind the legendary book/movie "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea"

Fun fact - It is the first science fiction film produced by Walt Disney Pictures,  as well as the only science-fiction film produced by Walt Disney himself.

5 - Kirk Douglas was one of the stars of that movie.

Fun fact -Douglas grew up as Izzy Demsky, although he never legally changed his name.

6 - Kirk Douglas paid for his college education by working as a gardener.

I kid you not. Here is the exact line from his Wikipedia page:
"Unable to afford tuition, Douglas talked his way into St Lawrence University and received a loan, which he paid back by working part-time as a gardener and a janitor."

Gardening

How you like me now? Did you actually make it this far? Impressive.

I challenge you all to complete the same six degrees with gardening and any other item you'd like and add to the comments section. The best one will win ... ummm ... nothing ... but will feel good knowing they were challenged and came through like a true champion.

Bring it on!

  4. This is crazy! Last night we celebrated our daughter's birthday with family and friends at our favorite pizza joint, Tim's Pizza: home to the loosest claw machine in the state. Harper wins...are you ready? a METS teddy bear! That's right. I wowed the crowd with my intimate knowledge of the design of the logo. Those folks think I am sooo smart. Your blog is educating folks all over the country. (Disclaimer: of course, I gave you no credit.)
