Bittersweet – pleasure alloyed with pain

  • The temperature outside could not be more comfortable.
  • The humidity is gone.
  • The mosquitoes have packed their bags and left.
  • The foliage and leaf colors are fantastic:

  • NFL football is in full swing:
Yet I can’t get rid of this feeling of dread that threatens to take over me.
How did this?:

Turn so quickly into this?:
I have come to truly appreciate those plants that “die well”, but I get the most pumped watching foliage continue to grow or blooms rounding into form like in the two photos below:
Caryopteris ‘Sunshine Blue’

Obedient Plant ‘Summer Snow’

I know the change of season is inevitable and a fact of life, but that doesn’t mean I have to simply accept it, right?
Of course, I also reserve the right to change my mind and rant and rave about how beautiful the Fall is.
Give me one second, I need to look up the definition of schizophrenic.
John

Interesting. Fall always fills me with a huge wave of relief–I’m dead tired this time of year, and I love winter. I love the idea of nestling down, settling in for a long winter’s nap, as it were. But I love winter and snow, too.

I love fall, gives me a new hope of doing better next year. I plan my moves, designs and colors in the fall. As I cut something down I think do you really belong here? You would be surprised how many times the answer is no and I start moving things around.

I love to plant bulbs and they should be arriving soon. I guess fall for me is the hope of what’s to come!

Great pics. It doesn’t look like fall here yet; everything is brown because of the drought. As a Louisiana girl, I loved the Saints helmet best! Saint to the 2012 Super Bowl!

Fall is the time for me when joy filld me when I think’of gardening
    soup
birthdays we have three in fall and two the 19th and 18th of Spetmeber
    campfires
    srew
    cowboy food
    apple picking
but then when I think of winter I feel sad. I like snow but not much falls in st louis so it is often gray and dull.
Your pictures are beautiful. Ours are not that grand yet.

So your mosquitoes have gone? Our Scottish midges have not! But autumn is truly upon us and it;s getting chilly. Your garden looks beautiful, John and so full of colour. Enjoy it while you can!

Fall is coming down here and I can’t wait to embrace after this long hot summer. Your pix have been an inspiration.

At this very moment in Western Australia (south) it is raining a beautiful drenching rain that is a welcome finish to the cropping season, I truly appreciate your gorgeous fall colours, we dont get the same contrast here, not cold enough.

Ranting is acceptable. I hate winter in the PNW, can it rain anymore or be any more cloudy! UGH
Your fall colors are beautiful, I miss that.
The obedient flower is a lovely one.
