Garden Bloggers Bloom Day – July

Posted on July 15, 2013 by jmarkowski Posted in Blooms .
We just returned from a ten day vacation down south and my son and I are off to the MLB All Star Game Fanfest in New York City, so I am not really capable of full sentences at this point.
I’ll be back in full swing in just a few days.
Until then, here are some current pics from the garden as much has changed in only a week and a half:   ï»¿

Assessing the blooms

Posted on June 26, 2013 by jmarkowski Posted in Blooms .
It is a shock to see actual healthy looking blooms out in the yard this time of year. Even a blind squirrel …
OK, enough of the false modesty, here is what I am seeing in good old rural New Jersey this early summer 2013:
Yes, they are everywhere, but I still love the combo of purple coneflowers and russian sage, especially when the coneflowers actively re-seed, giving it all a much more natural look:

Monarda (Bee Balm) ‘Colrain Red’ in front of a soon to be blooming Clethra ‘Hummingbird’:

The first signs of bloom on ‘Baby Joe’ Joe Pye Weed. I am so psyched to have located these dwarf versions of the original:

Plant name, no idea; it is everywhere in the wild growth around my property and some snuck into my man-made garden. Pretty cool:

Asclepias incarnata (Swamp Milkweed) emerging (in front of Panicum ‘Northwind’):

Mountain Mint is so understated but that is why I love it … that and all the bugs it attracts:

I have no idea which phlox this is; got three for $1.99 and I couldn’t resist, powdery mildew be damned:

Blooms, Blooms, Blooms (And no more peony talk)

Posted on June 3, 2013 by jmarkowski Posted in Blooms .
Just to prove that I am not completely fixated on my peonies (that didn’t sound right), here are some other blooms in and about my garden during this fantastic time of year.
Veronica just about on its last legs but hoping the periodic deadheading will extend it a bit further:

Physocarpus (Ninebark) ‘Diablo’ just started blooming and looks OK; I still value it mostly for the foliage:

Geranium ‘Brookside’ which I’ve been rather critical of in the past, looks good now that it is allowed to roam wild a bit:

Itea ‘Henry’s Garnet’ doesn’t blow you away in bloom, but it is reliable and performs so well in my native bed where it is consistently moist/wet:

I know I am going to enjoy Amsonia ‘Blue Ice’ for years to come as six of these were planted just last fall as tiny plugs and they already look fantastic. Not to mention they are ignored by the deer and the rabbits and survived wet feet this past winter:

Blooms nice, the rest … not so much. I am losing it for Tradescantia (Spiderwort) ‘Sweet Kate’ so they better shape up soon or they are gone:

Penstemon ‘Husker’s Red’ just about to bloom in full; give it about a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10:

First blooms on Hypericum ‘Albury Purple’:

Spirea ‘Snow Storm’ … hmmmm … takes up space … blooms are “decent” … suppresses weeds since better than bare ground … guess she can stay:

Blooms aplenty

Posted on May 13, 2013 by jmarkowski Posted in Blooms .
I found myself busy with work, baseball, softball and life in general and didn’t even realize the following happened:
Viburnum ‘Shoshoni’ exploded in bloom and I’m loving it from every angle:

Amsonia ‘Tabernaemontana’ about to bloom:

Campanula ‘Joan Elliot’ blooming as well:

A new introduction to the ONG family, Geranium ‘Espresso’ showing first blooms since planted last year:

The peony buds literally formed overnight and I will be guarding them 24/7 from the soon to approach deer:

Iberis (Candytuft) ‘Snowflake’ flanked by Lamium (Dead Nettle) ‘Purple Dragon’:

And the Salvia ‘May Night’, Ajuga ‘Chocolate Chip’ keep on keepin on:

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day – October

Posted on October 15, 2012 by jmarkowski Posted in Blooms .
I actually remembered on the 15th this month. Of course, there isn’t a whole lot blooming right now so I apologize in advance for any disappointment:

Miscanthus ‘Gracillimus’

Sedum ‘Autumn Fire’

Helenium autumnale (Sneezeweed)
Caryopteris ‘Sunshine Blue’

Anemone ‘September Charm’

Hydrangea ‘Little Lime’

My OWN Garden Blogger’s Bloom Day

Posted on September 19, 2012 by jmarkowski Posted in Blooms .
I’m a bad ass.
I really am … and here’s why.
The 15th of every month is widely known to be “Garden Bloggers Bloom Day” where garden bloggers all over the universe share what’s blooming in their garden. Good times.
But this guy doesn’t play by those rules. No way. I have my own GBBD and it’s on the 18th or 24th or 29th of each month. In simpler terms, it’s whenever I want to do it.
I cannot be controlled.
I play by my own rules.
I dance to the beat of my own drummer.
I am, a true … “bad ass”.
So join me in my rebellion as we tour my gardens on the 18th of this month (Feels good doesn’t it?)
Caryopteris (Bluebeard) ‘Sunshine Blue’:

Hydrangea paniculata ‘Little Lime’:

Asclepias incarnata (Swamp Milkweed) ‘Ice Ballet’:

Miscanthus ‘Strictus’ blowing in the 45mph winds:

A slow build to the blooms on Sorghastrum (Indian Grass) ‘Sioux Blue’:

The stellar Sedum ‘Autumn Fire’:

Almost 75% of my property is bordered by wild flowers and other wild growth and the Goldenrod takes center stage this time of year:

It provides quite the backdrop to all of my “man made” gardens:

Never before have I had re-blooming on my Viburnum ‘Shoshoni’:

Althea (Rose of Sharon) ‘Lavender Chiffon’ keeps on going:

As does Boltonia ‘Pink Beauty’:

Doesn’t it feel good to be bad?

John
